First/Last-'The Essentials' Deadstring Brothers

"It may be a surprise to hear the country rock sounds of Detroit's Deadstring Brothers coming from a city better known for loud rock and roll, but disillusionment can take many channels. Desolation, frustration and regret have always been present where great country music was played, and from its bombed-out inner city to its sterile suburbs, Detroit has its share. Deadstring Brothers began in fall 2003. Since then, the band has worked to develop their own take on the American Sound, drawing influences from a variety of sources. Its all in there somehow, declares Kurt, but blues and country music just feel the most natural. The band has been touring steadily since the 2004 release of their eponymous debut and have shared the stage with acts ranging from Shooter Jennings, Cat Power and Jesse Sykes to Giant Sand, My Morning Jacket, Drive by Truckers and the Mekons."

Hot DAMN, I have loved this band for so long and I am really excited that they are stopping in Pittsburgh tonight (6/19) at the Thunderbird Cafe! It's an early show and the band hits the stage at 8 p.m. so don't be late. A huge thanks to J.D. 'Mack' Mackinder (Bass/Vocals) for taking a few minutes to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
“Purple Rain” and “Sports” are the first two cassettes that I ever bought with my own cash..at good ole Kmart in Livonia, MI. They both kick ass no matter what anyone thinks.

Your last album bought?
Mike Cooley, “Fool on the Corner”.

Favorite album of all time?
Impossible question, just go with the “Waylon Live” double masterpiece.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Anything Radiohead did after “OK Computer”...it all just sucks, and it ain't cool at all no matter what hipster tells you it is.

First concert attended?
The Cure in 1989 at the Palace in Auburn Hills. It was absolutely epic, and I hate that word. Stunning.

Last concert?
I never get to see anyone. We just play all the time. I think it was Mike Cooley in Evanston, IL.

Favorite concert ever?
Also an impossible question. Go see The Cure, the Afghan Whigs, Drive By Truckers, The Cult, Dale Watson, The Pixies, The Black Crowes…and you decide…I love live music and those bands are all fantastic at doing it.

Any thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
I love Pittsburgh, and the Thunderbird is a great music room. It’s a beautiful city and I’m happy to be back there again. Plus, I want one of those kick ass sandwiches.
