First/Last-Wolkoff

"Wolkoff released her phenomenal Talismans EP at the end of August to critical acclaim worldwide. The EP featured the stand-out singles “Curve Appeal” and "Hand It To The Bandit”. Talismans was a collaboration w/ the rising producer Icarus Moth, whose style pays homage to world dance music, synth-pop, R&B, house music and beyond. Wolkoff is the moniker for Brooklyn's indie electro-pop artist Joan Wolkoff who's latest EP is entitled "Talismans". She makes her Pittsburgh debut this Friday (10/30) at a special 'Devil's Night Club' at Cattivo with Pittsburgh's Metacara and DJ No Sleep bringing along her producer Icarus Moth with body painted dancers and a blown out A/V show for good measure. Should be a real 'treat!' I want to thank Joan for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
Probably “Emperor Tomato Ketchup” by Stereolab on compact disc. I miss the sound and feeling of cellophane wrap peeling off its sleek diamond casing, and getting the actual CD to click onto the, uh, case-nubbin.

Your last album bought?
“Ancestral Lands” by Hollow Hand, a delicious swirl of psych folk and mystical narratives.

Favorite album of all time?
“Abbey Road”.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Ask the Salvation Army; that's where I take music that doesn't do the trick for me. All those castoff records! But how will you know if you never try, right? I kind of love bad albums.

First concert attended?
Egyptian-born children's singer-songwriter Raffi who you may recall from his 80's club banger, "Baby Beluga."

Last concert?
By the time you read this it'll be Blur, and that's all that matters. In an incredible twist of the time-space continuum, I was once in Florence, Italy at the same time as Tortoise.

Least favorite concert?
I went to a Cat Power concert in my hometown of Toronto at the outset of her career and despite her angelic voice she was sort of hostile to her audience. It was uncomfortable.

Any thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh's a wellspring of cyber-defense laboratories, organ transplant trailblazing and mountainous steak sandwiches. You're always topping Forbes' quality-of-life list, plus I'm pretty sure you guys 'invented' vitamin C or something. Icarus Moth, our dancers and I have had so much fun gearing up to open for Metacara at their Halloween party. What more can you ask for? We can't wait to discover you guys!
