First/Last-Total Slacker/Night Manager

Tuesday, June 5, 2012
Larryville

"Brooklyn's Total Slacker IS an American psych-lo-fi-garage-noise-gaze band founded by Tucker Rountree and Emily Jane.  After a killer year of shows with Thee Oh Sees, DFA 1979, The Rapture, Vivian Girls, Wavves, etc. and a successful run with their debut LP release Thrashin', the band ventures out on this Summer's Touch Yourself USA Tour bringing along their friends Night Manager.
Night Manager draws from grungy early 90s jams and adds a 60s pop sensibility.  A mainstay in Brooklyn, these boys and girls have garnered attention not only in their own backyard, sharing stages with such acts as Tennis, Frankie Rose, Bass Drum of Death, Japanther, DIIV and DOM, but have received praise from Pitchfork, Fader, Altered Zones plus many more."

After catching Dawes for free downtown, you must head on over to GarfArt for some true DIY weirdness courtesy of a couple crazy bands from Brooklyn. Also on the bill are The Spinto Band. Total Slacker's Tucker & Emily and Night Manager's Tassy were nice enough to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
Emily Jane: “Spice Girls”.
Tucker Rountree: Weezer’s “Blue Album”.
David Anthony Tassy: MC Hammer’s “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em”.

Your last album bought?
Emily & Tucker: The last time we bought vinyl we got Grimes, The Ramones and Neutral Milk Hotel.
Tassy: MC Hammer’s “Pumps and a Bump”.

Favorite album of all time?
Emily: The Stooges’, “Funhouse”.
Tucker: Weezer’s “Blue Album”.
Tassy: MC Hammer’s “Too Legit to Quit”.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Tassy: The EP that we're about to drop. It sucks!

First concert attended?
Emily: Nelly, Destiny’s Child (10 yrs. old).
Tucker: B.B King. I asked him for a guitar pick afterwards and he gave me a necklace that he was wearing that had his initials on it. (13 yrs. old).
Tassy: Tom Petty.

Last concert?
Emily & Tucker: We both recently got the chance to hear Weird Rivers, and ALASKAS!
Tassy: That we didn’t play? I was coincidentally in San Francisco while Frankie Rose & DIIV were passing through.

Favorite concert ever?
Emily & Tucker: Thee Oh Sees at SXSW 2010, when we opened for them and WOODS for the Impose Magazine party. That was an epic night!
Tassy: TONSTARTSSBANDHT at 285 Kent Avenue when the lights blew out and they kept wailing.

Least favorite concert?
Emily: Saw a band at SXSW this year at the Virgin Fort with white pants. They sang and looked kind of like the Jonas Brothers.
Tucker: There was this ridiculous band with the tightest pants I've ever seen and they sang songs about the beach and discontented suburban middle class circumstances, all the while ignoring the current affairs of the world around us. I think they were called Taco Bell.
Tassy: The one we're playing next! It’s gonna suck!

Any thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Emily & Tucker: It’s our first time playing in Pittsburgh and we can't wait to check it out!!!
Tassy: Caitlyn was actually born there. She moved to Paris with her folks when she was two which is why she hasn’t been deported for being a ‘Frenchie’.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like Tuesday will be too fun in Garfield!
