I have to confess, I was way excited to see openers The Broken West play. Headliner A.C. Newman? Not so much. His new music wasn't grabbing as much as The New Pornos 'Challengers' did a couple years ago and I was WAY more into getting to the Brillobox for MOIP's CD release show (which was unbelievably awesome...more soon). I did catch a good half hour of Newman's set before I bailed and I can say I didn't miss THAT much. More Tomorrow.

This was the beginning of an incredibly hectic schedule of concerts for me. Over the next few days I am going to run myself ragged but the quality of bands are well worth it, starting tonight with one of my favorite groups, The Broken West. I missed these guys opening for Fountains Of Wayne at Diesel a few years ago for some reason or another and I was very excited to finally see them. They were spot on, even though the Warhol is an unusual room to play in. A seated show in a nice theater is miles away from the dingy Grog Shop where they played the night before with fights and drunkards aplenty. The drastic shift towards silent calm unnerved the band somewhat but I couldn't tell.

These three guys opened for Hallelujah The Hills and unfortunately were totally forgettable. One of them seemed extremely amateurish and I kinda felt I could have played a better set.

I was way geeked to see The Swimmers on this night. I never heard of openers Spanish Prisoners and through a little investigating found out that they backed up Daniel Johnston a few weeks before! They weren't bad. In fact, they seemed extremely excited to be playing and I think that enthusiasm shone through.

Image Of The Day-"Strange Bird"
This was a strange show as I have already commented on in one of my year end posts. I saw Bobby play Pittsburgh three times and on each occasion he seems more pissed about being booked here. I guess I will never see him perform again but if I do I wish he would treat the fans that actually came to see him a little better than pieces of crap as he usually does.

I like bluegrass music, although for me, any specific genre of music (Reggae, Classical) is more enjoyable in small doses. While her background is fiddlin' with the good ole boys, I got the feeling tonight that she is attempting to break out of that mold and go somewhat mainstream. I believe she will be able to with the talent she has. Highly enjoyable set. More tomorrow.

This band took me totally by surprise. I am usually hip to who's playing when I go to a show. WYEP was offering free tickets to members for Carrie Rodriguez and as hard as I tried, I couldn't find out who was opening. In fact, I didn't even realize there was an opener. When we got to the club we found out it's this duo from Brooklyn. I swear, on the first note they played I was hooked! Great under the radar band.

Since I won't be attending any shows for a few weeks, I will be going through my archives to bring you pics that for some reason or another never were shown. Here's Crooked Fingers who opened for Okkervil River at Smalls in October.

There is a reason Local Honey has been my #1 Top friend on myspace since I joined, they have been my favorite band in town for awhile now. Playing the 'quiet room' on a Sunday afternoon was a great place to see them. Lovely set in front of an ALL ages crowd. They definitely should do that more often.
